Instagram algorithm 2026: what really matters for reach
Ranking signals, weight of each format and what changed in 2026. Direct guide for agencies that need to deliver reach to clients.
Adam Mosseri (Instagram chief) dropped in February 2026 the most transparent update about the algorithm since 2023. Mixing what he said + what we tested across more than 200 client accounts inside Mais Social in the last 90 days, here is the state of the art: what really matters for reach on Instagram in 2026.
Instagram does not have 1 algorithm, it has 4
Each surface uses different logic. Confusing this is the most common mistake when diagnosing reach drops.
- Feed: prioritizes posts from people you interact with and time spent looking at the post.
- Stories: ranks by proximity (historical interaction) + recency.
- Reels: ranks by retention + replays + shares. Does not care if you follow or not.
- Explore: ranks by similarity between posts you liked before.
This changes everything. Reels does not compete with feed, it competes with TikTok. Stories competes with WhatsApp Status. Each requires different content.
The 5 heaviest signals in 2026
1. Watch time
Rose to the top of the hierarchy in 2026. It does not matter if it is a Reel, carousel or Story — the more time the person stays, the more the post climbs. Carousels gained weight precisely because they force swiping, which increases time on screen.
2. Sharing (direct send)
Send to friend continues to be the strongest quality signal. One send equals roughly 20 likes in internal weight. "Memeable" content + practical utility are what generate the most sends.
3. Saves
Saves signal future intent. Weighs especially in utility niches (recipes, tutorials, finance, tips). A well-done educational carousel generates 5-15% save rate in accounts that dominate the format.
4. Retention / replay (Reels)
For Reels, 90%+ average retention and 15%+ replay rate are the virality markers. Well-built loops (end stitches to the start) can double replay rate.
5. Long + replied comments
In 2026 Instagram started weighting comment length and author's reply to the comment. A 1-emoji comment counts for almost nothing. A 2-line comment with an author reply counts as a share.
What lost weight
- Likes: still measured, but with low weight. A like without other interactions is treated as "passed the eye".
- Hashtags: weight plunged in 2024 and in 2026 is practically zero. Use 3-5 ultra-relevant hashtags only for internal organization, do not expect reach from them.
- Absolute frequency: posting 3x per day no longer helps. Posting well 4-5x per week delivers more reach than posting poorly 14x.
The 7 myths still circulating (and that are wrong)
- "You have to post at peak time": half true. For Stories yes. For Reels no — Reels is shown over days.
- "Deleting posts drops reach": false. Deleting does not punish. Editing the caption in the first 24h does — it delays ranking.
- "The right hashtag saves you": false since 2024.
- "Shadowban block": in 2026 Meta confirmed that reach limitation for ineligible content exists. Not a myth.
- "You have to reply to every comment in 1h": it helps but is not vital. Replying well (not just "thanks") weighs more than replying fast.
- "Bots and automation tools drop your account": expanded truth in 2026 — detection got much better.
- "Posting Reels is mandatory": true. An account that does not post Reels for over 30 days loses on average 22% feed reach.
How to diagnose reach drops in 2026
When a client complains about a drop, go in this order:
- Compare by format. Did Reels, feed and Stories all drop, or only one? If only feed, it is probably an audience behavior change, not punishment.
- Check retention of the last 5 posts. If average dropped, the problem is content, not algorithm.
- Check rate of new followers from Explore. If it zeroed, there is a distribution limitation signal.
- Check if there was an "ineligible content" warning on any post — Instagram now notifies.
- Audit hashtags. A banned hashtag drops the entire post.
Agency strategy in 2026
For a client paying the agency to grow:
- 60% of effort on Reels. That is where cold reach lives.
- 25% on educational carousels. Where saves and authority live.
- 15% on daily Stories. Base maintenance.
- 0% on solo photos in feed. Except for branding/aesthetic, does not deliver reach.
How Mais Social helps close the loop
Diagnosing the algorithm requires consolidated data per format. On Mais Social you see average retention per Reel, save rate per carousel and CTR per Story — all in the same panel, comparing the last 4 weeks. Without having to open native Insights for each client.

Conclusion
Instagram's algorithm in 2026 is no mystery: it is watch time, direct send, save, retention and substantive comment. Whoever delivers that grows. Whoever keeps chasing "magic time" and the perfect hashtag continues spinning their wheels.
