Persona

A persona is the semi-fictional and detailed representation of the ideal customer, based on real data and interviews. It goes far beyond a target audience: it includes name, age, profession, pains, goals, habits and cultural references. It serves as a compass for content, copy, offers and media channel decisions.

What is a Persona?

Persona (or buyer persona) is the detailed and humanized representation of a business's ideal customer. Unlike target audience, which is generic and demographic (e.g., "women 25-45, AB class, São Paulo"), a persona has a name, profession, specific pains, goals, behaviors and even cultural references.

The purpose is simple: when everyone on the team knows who they're talking to, decisions become faster and more aligned.

What a persona should contain

  • Fictional name (humanizes)
  • Age, gender, location
  • Profession and income
  • Lifestyle and routine
  • Personal and professional goals
  • Pains and frustrations (especially those your product solves)
  • Common purchase objections
  • Preferred media channels (Instagram? TikTok? LinkedIn?)
  • Brands she admires
  • How she researches before buying
  • Typical quote (something she would say)

How to build one

  1. Look at your current customer base: who are the top 20%?
  2. Interview 8 to 12 people from that base (30 to 45 minutes each)
  3. Analyze network data (Instagram Insights, Meta Business)
  4. Identify patterns (profile, pains, recurring objections)
  5. Write the persona on 1 visual page
  6. Validate with the sales and service team

Larger businesses may have 2 to 4 personas. More than that gets confusing.

Practical example

Persona — Marina, the Tired Entrepreneur

  • 34, married, 1 child aged 5
  • Lives in Curitiba, middle class
  • Co-owner of a bakery with 8 employees
  • Household income: R$ 18k
  • Routine: opens the shop at 7am, leaves at 7pm, picks her child up at school
  • Goals: scale to 2 shops; have more time with family
  • Pains: can't handle marketing alone; tried 2 agencies, both bad; afraid of not knowing what to measure
  • Objections: "I'll lose control if I delegate"; "I don't have R$ 5k/month"
  • Channels: Instagram, WhatsApp, occasionally LinkedIn
  • Typical quote: "I just want to grow without losing sleep"

With this persona defined, it becomes easy to decide:

  • Captions use her words ("without losing sleep", "tight routine")
  • Reels show the busy entrepreneur routine
  • Offer highlights a dashboard with "5 minutes a day"
  • Media in Reels and Stories before 9am and after 9pm

Persona vs Target audience

  • Target audience: "Women 30-45, AB class, small-business owners in SP, RJ and PR"
  • Persona: Marina (above)

The target audience drives media targeting. The persona drives every other decision.

Common mistakes

  • Inventing a persona without data ("I think it's like this")
  • Creating 8 personas (becomes unusable)
  • Persona with no concrete pain — says nothing
  • Not sharing with the whole team
  • Not revisiting every 12 months (market changes, persona changes)
