Algorithm
The algorithm is the AI system that decides what content each user sees, in what order and with what frequency. It considers hundreds of signals: interaction history, screen time, saves, shares and relevance. Each network has its own, and all change constantly.
What is the Algorithm?
Algorithm in social media is the set of automated rules (today, mostly machine-learning based) that decides what content each user sees and in what order. Each network has its own, with distinct goals.
The end goal is to keep the user in the app longer. That means rewarding content that drives retention, return and meaningful interaction.
How it works in 2026
Main signals evaluated, in approximate weight order:
- Screen time on post: how long the person stopped to consume it
- Saves and shares: very high relevance signals
- Meaningful comments (more than 4 characters, not lone emojis)
- Interaction history between user and account
- Recency of the post
- Match with inferred interests of the person
- Creative quality (resolution, audio, no competing watermarks)
- Video retention (average percent watched)
- Likes (weaker signal in 2026 than in 2020)
Differences between networks
- Instagram: prioritizes Reels and saved content. Accounts have a quality "score"
- TikTok: 100% algorithmic, ignores followers. Every post is a lottery
- LinkedIn: rewards dwell time (time on post) and long comments
- X: "For you" recommends; "Following" shows chronological
- Threads: mixes interest and recency, still being tuned
- YouTube Shorts: full-view rate is the king signal
Practical example
A marketing account publishes three posts in the same week:
- Post A — event photo: 8% reach/followers, 1.5% engagement
- Post B — educational carousel: 22% reach/followers, 7% engagement, 480 saves
- Post C — Reel with strong hook: 180% reach/followers, 9% engagement
The algorithm "reads" post B as reference (high saves) and keeps distributing it for weeks. The Reel goes viral because high retention signaled quality. The photo died fast from low retention and interaction.
Common myths
- "Hashtags increase reach" — in 2026 hashtags carry little weight; they serve more as labeling
- "Posting every day forces the algorithm" — high frequency without quality tanks the account
- "Engagement groups/pods work" — the system detects artificial patterns
- "There is a magic posting time" — ideal time is specific to your audience, not global
How to work with the algorithm
- Focus on retention (strong hook, pacing, value delivered)
- Ask for actions that weigh more: save, share, reply
- Consistent content on 2 or 3 themes (helps the AI classify the account)
- Reply to comments in the first hours
- Diversify formats (Reels + carousel + story)
