Engagement Rate
Engagement rate is the percentage of interactions in relation to reach or total followers. It normalizes absolute engagement so you can compare posts and accounts of different sizes. In 2026, a healthy rate on Instagram falls between 2% and 5% over reach, and 5% to 10% on TikTok.
What is Engagement Rate?
Engagement rate is the percentage indicator that shows how much of the reached audience interacted with a post. It solves the raw-number problem: a profile with 10k followers and 800 likes performs much better than one with 1M and 5k likes, even if the second has more absolute engagement.
There are three main formulas, and picking the right one matters:
- By reach: most accurate to assess individual post performance
- By impressions: used mainly in paid media
- By followers: useful to compare accounts, but penalizes large profiles
How to calculate
By reach:
Rate = (Interactions / Reach) x 100
By followers:
Rate = (Interactions / Followers) x 100
Where interactions = likes + comments + shares + saves (+ clicks, if the platform reports them).
2026 Benchmarks
- Instagram: 2% to 5% by reach is healthy; above 6% is excellent
- TikTok: 5% to 10% by view is standard
- LinkedIn: 3% to 5% by reach is strong
- Threads: 4% to 8% (still low saturation)
- X (Twitter): 0.5% to 1.5% is the average
Practical example
A skincare brand carousel:
- Reach: 22,000
- Likes: 980 | Comments: 75 | Saves: 410 | Shares: 130
- Total interactions: 1,595
- Engagement rate by reach: 1,595 / 22,000 = 7.25%
Above the Instagram benchmark, signaling highly relevant content. The 410 saves indicate the audience will revisit it later — a strong signal for the algorithm to expand reach.
Common mistakes
- Mixing formulas between reports (one week by reach, another by followers). Standardize.
- Using rate-by-followers on accounts with more than 100k. Organic reach rarely exceeds 15% of followers, so the rate looks artificially low.
- Forgetting to include saves and shares. In 2026 these interactions weigh much more than likes in Instagram's algorithm.
- Comparing across networks without context. TikTok and LinkedIn play completely different games.
