Reach

Reach is the number of unique people who saw your content at least once in a period. Each person counts only once, even if they saw the post several times. It is the metric that measures the real size of the audience you impacted and the basis for calculating engagement rate and frequency.

What is Reach?

Reach is the number of unique accounts that saw a post, story, Reel or ad in a defined period. The essential difference is that reach counts people, not displays.

If one person sees your story 5 times, reach is still 1 — what changes is impressions (which would be 5).

There are two main types:

  • Organic reach: people who saw the content without you paying. Includes followers who got the post in their feed and non-followers who discovered it via explore, recommendations or shares.
  • Paid reach: people reached by ad campaigns.

How to calculate

Reach is delivered directly by the platform — you do not calculate it manually. What matters is crossing it with other metrics:

Reach rate = (Reach / Followers) x 100

An account with 50,000 followers that averages 8,000 reach per post has a 16% rate, considered healthy on Instagram in 2026 (market average is around 8 to 12%).

Practical example

A coffee shop with 12,000 followers posts a Reel showing the steps to make a specialty coffee.

  • Reach: 38,000 unique accounts
  • Impressions: 71,000 total views
  • Average frequency: 1.87 times per person
  • Non-followers reached: 31,000 (82% of reach)

This is a clear sign of virality: most of the reach came from people who didn't follow the brand yet, signaling growth potential if the content stays on track.

Common mistakes

  • Confusing reach with impressions. Impressions are total displays; reach is unique people.
  • Thinking that gaining followers automatically increases reach. Without engagement, the algorithm distributes less.
  • Ignoring non-follower reach, which is the best gauge of discoverability.
  • Comparing reach across different formats without context (Reels reach far more than static feed, as expected).
