Impressions
Impressions are the total number of times a piece of content was displayed on screen, counting all repetitions. Unlike reach (unique people), impressions count every view, even if it is the same person seeing it several times. It is the metric that helps you understand frequency and brand exposure.
What are Impressions?
Impressions measure how many times a post, story, Reel or ad appeared on someone's screen — regardless of whether the person interacted or whether the same person saw it more than once.
If you see an ad in your feed, leave the app, return and see it again, that counts as 2 impressions and 1 reach.
Platforms break impressions down by source:
- Feed: views from followers
- Explore / Home: algorithmic recommendations
- Hashtags: discovery via search
- Profile: people who saw the post by going directly to the profile
- Other: notifications, external links
How to calculate
Impressions are delivered by the platform. The useful relationship is with reach:
Frequency = Impressions / Reach
For example, 90,000 impressions for 30,000 people reached = frequency of 3. Each person saw the content an average of 3 times.
Practical example
A paid campaign running for 7 days:
- Impressions: 245,000
- Reach: 68,000
- Frequency: 3.6
In conversion campaigns, frequency above 3 to 4 usually signals creative fatigue: the same people are seeing the ad again and again without acting. Time to swap creatives or expand the audience.
In branding campaigns, higher frequencies (5 to 7) are acceptable because the goal is brand recall.
Common mistakes
- Reporting impressions as synonymous with people. Stakeholders confuse them easily.
- Using impressions to calculate organic engagement rate (use reach — it is the standard).
- Ignoring the distribution of impressions by source. Knowing whether most come from feed or explore changes strategy.
- Celebrating high impressions with low CPM without checking whether the audience is truly qualified.
Impressions are useful for sizing exposure, but they are never the main success metric. Track them together with reach, engagement and conversion to get the full picture.
