CTR (Click-Through Rate)

CTR (Click-Through Rate) is the percentage of people who clicked a link, ad or CTA in relation to the number of times it was displayed. It is the metric that measures how attractive your creative is. On Meta Ads, average CTR sits between 1% and 2%; above 3% is considered excellent.

What is CTR?

CTR (Click-Through Rate) is the indicator that shows the share of clicks received in relation to the times an ad, link or button was displayed. It is used in paid media, email marketing, SEO and any channel with a clickable link.

A high CTR signals the creative, copy and offer are working: they caught attention enough for the user to stop and click. A low CTR signals problems with relevance, targeting or creative.

How to calculate

CTR = (Clicks / Impressions) x 100

For example, 850 clicks on 42,000 impressions = CTR of 2.02%.

2026 Benchmarks

  • Meta Ads (Facebook/Instagram): 1% to 2% is average; 3%+ is great
  • Google Search Ads: 3% to 6%, varies a lot by industry
  • Google Display: 0.4% to 0.8%
  • LinkedIn Ads: 0.4% to 0.8%
  • TikTok Ads: 1% to 3%
  • Email marketing: 2% to 5% over opens

Practical example

A fashion store tests two creatives in a traffic campaign:

  • Creative A: 65,000 impressions, 520 clicks → CTR 0.8%
  • Creative B: 58,000 impressions, 1,450 clicks → CTR 2.5%

Creative B has a 3x higher CTR. Even with fewer impressions, it drove nearly triple the site traffic. At scale, B's CPC will be proportionally lower, and it should get most of the budget.

How to improve CTR

  • Hook in the first 3 seconds of video, or in the first line of copy
  • Image with a human face performs on average 35% better than an isolated product
  • Explicit CTA: "Buy now", "See prices", "Download free"
  • Social proof in the creative (reviews, customer counts)
  • Tighter targeting increases relevance and CTR

Common mistakes

  • Optimizing only for CTR. High CTR with low conversion signals clickbait or the wrong audience.
  • Comparing CTR across formats. Stories CTR differs from Reels, which differs from feed.
  • Not testing creatives. Without A/B testing, you never know if you are leaving money on the table.
  • Forgetting CTR falls as frequency rises — audiences tire out.
