Conversion
Conversion is any valuable action a user completes in your funnel: a purchase, a sign-up, a download, a booking. Conversion rate is the percentage of visitors who performed that action, and optimizing it (CRO) usually delivers higher return than increasing traffic.
What is Conversion?
Conversion is any action that represents business value when completed by a user. The concept is flexible: it can be a completed purchase, but also an email sign-up, a booking, an ebook download or a WhatsApp message.
What matters is that each funnel stage typically has its own conversion:
- Top: newsletter sign-up, lead magnet download
- Middle: demo booking, quote request
- Bottom: purchase, contract, plan upgrade
How to calculate conversion rate
Conversion Rate = (Conversions / Visitors) x 100
If 12,000 people visited your site and 240 made a purchase, conversion rate is 2%.
2026 Benchmarks
- E-commerce (average): 1.5% to 3%
- Fashion e-commerce: 1% to 2%
- Electronics e-commerce: 2% to 4%
- B2B SaaS (trial): 3% to 5%
- Lead-capture landing page: 8% to 25%
- WhatsApp business (lead → sale): 15% to 40%
Practical example
A supplement store analyzes the funnel:
- Ad clicks: 18,000
- Unique site visitors: 16,200
- Add-to-carts: 1,620 (10%)
- Checkout starts: 810 (5%)
- Completed purchases: 405 → conversion rate 2.5%
The biggest bottleneck is between cart and checkout (50% drop). Likely high shipping cost or a bad payment process. Attacking this point can double revenue without adding R$ 1 to media.
How to increase conversion
- Social proof: reviews, testimonials, numbers (customers served, years in market)
- Speed: each extra second cuts conversion by up to 7%
- Clear CTA: single button, obvious action
- Free shipping: raises e-commerce conversion by an average of 30%
- Visible guarantee: refund, free exchange
- Mobile first: more than 75% of social traffic comes from mobile
Common mistakes
- Trying to increase conversion only by spending more on traffic.
- Not tracking micro-conversions (cart, checkout, scroll).
- Confusing campaign conversion rate with store conversion rate.
- Optimizing conversion without watching average order value. You can increase conversion and still earn less.
