ROAS (Return on Ad Spend)
ROAS (Return on Ad Spend) is the revenue return generated by each dollar invested in ads. A ROAS of 4 means for every R$ 1 invested, you earned R$ 4 in revenue. It is performance metric #1 in e-commerce and the basis for deciding whether a campaign continues, scales or gets cut.
What is ROAS?
ROAS (Return on Ad Spend) is a paid-media efficiency metric. It shows how much revenue a campaign generates relative to what it cost. Unlike ROI, which considers margin and operating costs, ROAS looks at gross revenue.
It is the preferred metric in e-commerce because it allows quick decisions: a campaign with ROAS below target burns budget; one above scales.
How to calculate
ROAS = Revenue generated by ads / Ad spend
It can be expressed as a number (4) or multiplier (4x). Some platforms show it as a percentage (400%).
What ROAS is good?
It depends on margin. Compute the break-even ROAS:
Minimum ROAS = 1 / gross profit margin
- 25% margin → minimum ROAS of 4
- 40% margin → minimum ROAS of 2.5
- 60% margin (digital product) → minimum ROAS of 1.67
Anything below that is direct loss.
Practical example
Cosmetics e-commerce with 35% gross margin (break-even ROAS ≈ 2.86):
- Reels campaign — cold audience: R$ 8,000 spent, R$ 22,400 in sales → ROAS 2.8 (at the limit)
- Remarketing campaign: R$ 4,000 spent, R$ 38,000 in sales → ROAS 9.5 (excellent)
- Carousel campaign — broad audience: R$ 6,000 spent, R$ 15,600 in sales → ROAS 2.6 (loss)
Decision: turn off the carousel, scale remarketing by 50% and optimize Reels campaign creatives.
How to increase ROAS
- Improve landing-page conversion (speed, copy, social proof)
- Raise average order value (upsell, kits, free shipping above X)
- Work the full funnel: cheap top (CPM/Reels), expensive retargeting (because it converts)
- Use lookalike audiences based on recent buyers
- Invest in a well-configured Pixel and Conversions API
Common mistakes
- Looking at ROAS in isolation, ignoring margin. ROAS 3 at 20% margin is a loss.
- Chasing ultra-high ROAS by killing top of funnel. Without the top, retargeting dies in 2 weeks.
- Comparing ROAS across funnel stages (cold and warm play different games).
- Trusting platform ROAS 100%. Compare with real revenue from checkout via UTMs or GA4.
